Long term diabetes can expose a person to many complications, foot problems being the commonest. Foot complications are a matter of concern as it may hinder with a person’s lifestyle, and may also be quite disabling at times.

Diabetic people often experience corns and calluses on the sole of the feet. You may also complain of heaviness or loss of sensation in your feet. Some of you may experience slow healing after a trivial injury which goes unnoticed for a long time, and may lead to ulcers.

• Check your feet daily for any cuts, blisters, nail problems, etc. If you notice any swelling, redness, heat - It can be a sign of infection and requires a visit to your doctor.

• Check if you are developing corns, calluses, sores, or ingrown toenails. Do not treat them at home. Visit a doctor for the removal.

• Develop a habit of washing your feet clean daily, especially between your toes. Do not forget to pat them dry and never use hot water, which could burn your skin.

• Check for minor cuts using a hand held mirror if you have difficulty bending forward.

• Moisturise your dry cracking skin on top and bottom of the foot, especially your cracked heels. Avoid applying cream in between your toes, as it may cause fungal infections. Medicated creams after your doctor’s consultation can be used in between your toes.

• Avoid walking barefoot even indoors. You can wear comfortable slippers or shoes to avoid any trivial cuts and injuries.

• Before wearing your shoes and socks, always inspect them inside out for any pebble or any object that can hurt your feet.

• Keep away fungal infections by wear clean and dry socks daily. If your feet perspire a lot, you can use a doctor prescribed antiperspirant spray.

• Wear comfortable elastic warm socks. Tight socks at the ankle or calf rim can hinder with your blood circulation.

• Quit smoking and alcohol drinking as it can further damage your blood vessels and may reduce circulation to your feet.

In addition, always remember to monitor your blood sugar levels and get periodic foot checkups done to avoid complications.
