Heel Pain

Introduction

Each foot step taken puts a tremendous amount of stress and strain on the heel. It is structured in such a fashion that it can easily bear whole body weight. But when the load goes beyond the limits, you may develop heel pain. It is a condition commonly experienced where weight bearing on the heel causes extreme pain.

Cause

Heel pain syndrome: It presents as soreness, due to over-use repetitive stress from excessive impact on a specific region of the foot. It is caused by shoes with low heels, a thinned out fat pad, or from a sudden increase in activity.

Treatment and Prevention

One should use footwear that absorbs shock, provide cushioning and elevate the heel to transfer pressure. Orthotics such as a heel cup, visco heel cradle, and good arch support will alleviate the pain.

Consulting a practioner for the use of oral anti inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, stretching and icing are suggested as well.
